I have been wanting to do a quick review about the above two gadgets. Being an HP iPaq rw6828 owner myself, makes me more want to share about significant benefits and shortfalls of the products. On the surface, it looks as if HP iPaq as a strong contender as compared to Dopod 838Pro due to HP’s stronger brand name. But please don’t be fooled as they are both made by the same manufacture in Taiwan i.e. HTC. Having had the pleasure of having the phone as my company for almost a year, at this stage I just wish that I could have bought Dopod 838Pro instead, which is better and extra stylish.

HP iPaq RW6828 PDA Phone
First off, is the 2.0 megapixel camera. Man, it takes ages for the phone to process the image i.e. more than 2 minutes to be exact before you can take the next image. I mean who would want to wait that long? Although I am pretty happy with the business productivity functionalities, but I would really appreciate a good image capture tool. Second, is the earphone jack. It’s broken twice in less than 8 months. Third, to listen to FM stereo you have to have earphone on. Fourth, poor stereo speaker quality. You can hardly hear a thing. Besides all of these bad points, I only have the best to say towards people at HP Customer Services. Their treatment of my device and me when I went over to their tower in Damansara Heights was superb on both occassions when my device was out of order. Feature-wise, all of the major connectivity options are present, including Tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz) GSM, GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 1.2, Infrared and 802.11b WiFi. Push-email is also available, putting it in direct competition with the BlackBerry. The iPAQ rw6828 is actually a rebranded version of the O2 Xda Atom with a couple of difference such as the protective cover.

DOPOD 838PRO MOBILE PHONE
Meanwhile, Dopod 838 Pro has shone like a star, although I have never had this monster in my possession for long, but I’ve had the privilege to test it out a while back. Sleek looking, it has 3G. Well of course it’s priced slightly higher than HP, but camera-wise it’s more powerful. It has zoom/focus function and also push email just like HP iPaq. Price difference just about RM400. I would go for this device anytime. Problems? According to my friend who has been using this device..NONE!

You made a mistake, the Atom (and the HP) are made by Quanta not HTC. This is a common error because of the O2 brand’s association with HTC.

I read about the comment on the 838Pro. Just wanted that I agree that the 838Pro’s outlook, style and user interface is exactly what I was looking for; nice to see, easy to use.
Unfortunately, the electronics itself isn’t that good in my opinion.
I bought this back in Jan 07. Few months later, it started giving problems. It hangs when I make phone calls. I send it back and they replaced a new mainboard FOC. But the problem still occured. I later found out that my unit can’t operate properly in areas where there is borderline or weak Maxis 3G network. I’m working in Shah Alam and staying in Sungai Buloh and these areas are having weak 3G network. I later switched the phone to GSM mode and it work well since. Not sure if this is happening to other 838Pro owners as well.
Then just several days ago my phone started hanging and couldn’t start. I send it back to SIS Tech and they now informed me that warranty is over and I had to pay RM 1,550 to replace a new mainboard. I could almost buy a new phone with that amount!
It could be that the magnetic belt pouch that came bundle with the purchase messed up the circuitry, but I’m not sure. Tried for months looking for non-magnetic belt pouch that fits the 838Pro but I can’t find one. Not even in Low Yatt.
Prior to this, I had a Nokia 6680. Had almost similar problems, I used a magnetic belt pouch, the phone started giving problems almost 8 months after I purchased it. The Nokia service centre told me that it was probably the strong magnetic source that damaged the circuitry. Oh and the 3G feature can’t operate reliably in zones with weak Maxis 3G network either.
I’ve already decided to buy a new unit and came across this page while browsing. Can’t say for sure whether I have enough confidence to buy a new HTC Touch (RM 1,699) as basically the 838Pro uses HTC firmware.
