Malaysia Broadband Service Comparison - Streamyx, Izzinet, Maxis Broadband & Celcom Broadband

Posted on May 16, 2008

I have become increasingly frustrated with maxis broadband. The last few days have been hell. The modem that has been running on HSDPA has been extremely slow to the point of intolerable and unacceptable proportions. I was on streamyx 1 Mbps 2 weeks ago but since moving to a new house, I have been relying on maxis broadband. The old streamyx was on my nephew’s account so I was not taking it with me. I really feel streamyx’s loss. Without wanting to go through another day of depression, I rang up the streamyx helpline today and was told it will take minimum 3 working days since I currently don’t have a fixed line. I am going for a 2 Mbps this time.

I have asked around which broadband service provider is the best and even conducted my own speedtest, and here’s the verdict. Since this is not a sponsored post, you can be assure of it’s fair ruling:

  1. Streamyx - still number one. Stop thinking that there is a need for you to have a mobile internet. You can always go to the nearby Starbucks cafe for surfing. The internet speed is even better. If you are saying you want to be internet mobile somewhere where’s there’s no Starbucks or Coffee Bean, I can assure you the place you are going would definitely would have worst service for maxis and celcom broadband. Take Batu Pahat for example. It has no 3G service, thus your maxis or celcom broadband will be running at speeds less that what you are experiencing in Kuala Lumpur. From my experience, it takes more than 3 hours before my google mail opens up its email.
  2. Izzinet - claimed to be 4G broadband provider. Bear in mind it’s 4G not 4 Mbps. Only available in Klang Valley area. Service is improving, but due to it being a small company, I doubt they have the financial strength to upgrade to better infrastructure as the number of users that they have grow.
  3. Maxis broadband. Service is getting from bad to worse in Kuala Lumpur. I frequently get disconnected for no reason. Often times you get redirected to its maxis broadband page, which is really annoying. The service speed alone is bad enough and getting us to download its maxis page is just way too much as it slows down the real work that I wanted to do with internet.
  4. Celcom broadband. The worst of the four. Even got complains from foreign IT consultants working at my company for its bad connectivity. Worst still, I find out that the majority of their agents not well-versed with the technical knowledge of the product. People consider broadband service for its speed and service. People are becoming smarter. They know how to compare. But if you don’t even know what speed transfer rate is, don’t even know what your competitor is offering, don’t know the unique selling proposition (USP) of your product is, don’t you even dare try to sell. Simple!

2 Jun 2008 hingga 28 Ogos 2008. oh ya..according to them 4 Mbps and 2Mbps only available to those living in Cyberjaya & Putrajaya..What a waste, they advertise it in the national newspapers for it but they could only support limited area of customers only. Then they are better off distributing posters around cyberjaya/putrajaya area only..

  3. tabuxander on May 25th, 2008 11:37 am

I think we better not switching to wireless broadband because it’s not totally proven, don’t believe what they have said in the advertisement. Stick with the fixed/wired broadband like jaring and streamyx.

  4. Dayat on May 31st, 2008 11:16 am

currently dun have any problem with my celcom broadband .. 384kbps with stable speed @ my house ..

  5. Angel on June 1st, 2008 12:36 am

celcom broadband is worst. Call for helpline, the ppl there just say one sentence, “if you are so unhappy, just terminate-lah”

believe it or not, I live at Sunway, I subscribe 3.6mbps. guess what’s speed i got from the speed test? Is 280kbps. Unbelievable. Call their branch manager, he told me that he can HELP me to downgrade my package to 384kkbps. I just replied him saying that, ” Mr XXX, Just give me a single reason, if you think I require just 384kbps package, why would i waste RM30 more to subscribe 3.6mbps?

Anyway, I guess at the meantime, streamyx is the best. Never try the u mobile yet. any suggestion on this U mobile?

Dekat Australia pulak, dah laju giler pun org masih complain lagi.

  7. kreuger on June 14th, 2008 10:17 pm

    Lol… I’ve 3 broadband services at once.
    1. IzziNet
    2. Celcom Broadband
    3. U-Mobile

Hello there. I live in Keramat KL. So here my comments about our latest broadband technology.

    1. IzziNet - Very Expensive for 1st time registration. Powerful speed only on Sunday. Don’t no why. Got dynamic IP address. But sometimes connection seem to be lost on normal day. Using PPoPE Connection. Modem Style - Radio Frequency Style

Funny how Streamyx came to the top of the list when I’m getting frequent disconnection for 7 days! I came here to your blog looking for a better broadband service due to my huge frustration over the poor service given to me by Streamyx.

A week before this I only had lag problems for a few days in which I called the technical assistants everyday. Then it got worse and I couldn’t connect for 6 days! That makes a total of 13 days of horrible internet service this month. I was given the hand phone number of the technician in charge of the cable connections where I live at (Gombak, Greenwood). He’d usually give a sigh on the phone and say how bad the other technicians working under him are doing and that he will check on them as soon as possible.

My Streamyx connection is currently HORRIBLE. I can’t connect at all! I’m actually using my neighbour’s streamyx wireless connection, and even though I can connect to the internet he still has disconnection problems. Just not as horrible as mine. I believe that this service is good and smooth. Its just those lazy technicians not doing anything that deserve a slap, punch, kick and a few throws out a three story building.

I’ve tried Maxis broadband and even that is worse than horrible. I get slow connection and unwanted disconnection. The technical assistance is bad bad bad. They charge you for your calling service unlike Streamyx. There was never a time when calling them made any improvement to my connection.

At the moment I’m waiting for my connection to reach stable mode before clicking the below submit button.

  10. Maxis Customer on July 28th, 2008 6:28 pm

A warning from one consumer to another:

DO NOT SIGN UP TO MAXIS BROADBAND!

If you love your kids, don’t let them use Maxis broadband.
Kids who surf slower, learn slower and with the added pressure from having an unstable internet connection and constant disconnection could lead them to having suicidal tendencies at such a young age.

IF YOU LOVE YOUR KIDS, SAY NO TO MAXIS BROADBAND!

  11. Anand on August 13th, 2008 9:52 pm

hahaha.. I’m using maxis broadband too. not having much of a real prob with connection but annoyed with thier policies

    1. your bandwith is limited to 3GB.
    2. P2P networks are banned…

so, what is the point of having a broadband in the first place?

  12. MiMikO on September 1st, 2008 3:04 pm

the real prob is with the general business principal. outsource outsource outsource. agents selling ah, haiya, like maxis broadband is the best broadband service in the world. sell sell sell. cheat cheat cheat. lie lie lie. no cvrg also said got cvrg. as long as can make sales. when cust face prob, call cust service ‘kasi taruk’ those ppl who did nothing in selling the service to the cust, wanna shout find the sales agent & shout la. hahaha. pity those cust srvc agent. if u really look at it,ppl who are within the 3g cvrg area will find the service acceptable. after all, this wireless broadband is still new right? give it a few more years, should be ok i guess.

  13. amir on October 11th, 2008 12:15 am

maxis bb need to be inprove! I subscribe 3.6mbps, but i get poor connection~ (but not frequenly disconnected like most of you said). The maxis bb has low strength if connecting only one parallel connection to server (one way only such surfing web, watching youtube, listening radio), but if the maxis bb is connecting in 2-10 parallel connection at same time, you can reach 1.5mbps at non-stop straight~ (i have tested on my download manager(FDM), it can reaced 900kbps-1.5mbps)

i lived at near subang airport, its near klang valley. :)

I testing playing counter-strike multiplayer online and it suck! Unbalance speed connection.
(maxis bb is not suitable to do anyting except huga download by download manager) He3

Streamyx the best …in Malaysia. Though still one of the shitest the world.

Celcom the best..in 3G covered area in Malaysia. maxis 2nd.

For torrent, Streamyx the best.. in Malysia. Dont use others..especially wireless, all brand.

For Streaming (P2P), Maxis the best.. in 3G covered area in Malaysia. Super faster than streamyx when its on 3.5G.

How I know? I use Streamyx & CelcomB/band, My 2 other friends uses Maxis b/band & Digi b/band. We tested our laptops connection at multiple places & compare. TRUST me. the above is results.

    Thank me..please.

I’ve tried Mobif Izzi and have filed many complains to their customer service center about their speed. On average day, my download speed is around 100kpbs-150kps. At nights, even up to 2am or 3am, I’ll be lucky if can get more than 10kbps. Mind you, the signal I get is usually 90 % excellent.

Daytime, I use in Kelana Jaya area. Night time in Damansara Heights area. All my calls to their call center is useless, despite all the screenshots I gave them of speedtest. Standard answer: We’ll get our tech support to call you.

Final conclusion: they’ve just lost more than two accounts, as I have also terminated all my office accounts too.

  16. Ben on February 3rd, 2009 2:08 am

I’m a Maxis Broadband user. I’ve tried Maxis Broadband in various places. All I can say is that the best speed is still at my home in PJ.

When I’m around PJ, the speed is undeniably fast, at least it’s fast enough to quench my ‘thirst’ for online gaming although the 3GB limit per month is the only down-side of it.

However, when I tested it at places such as Subang,Seremban and Cheras, the modem will be no different than a decorative sculpture.

I’m still awaiting the WiMax service from P1. Hopefully it’ll bring a whole new prospect to high speed STABLE internet connection.

Why the heck is malaysia’s internet system so messed up? Internet connections are always up and down for no freaking reason. MAYBE the workers at maxis/streamyx/izzi/celcom are downloading TONS of torrents this is lame

  19. tiffy anuar on April 23rd, 2009 2:17 pm

I’ve read all the comments that been wrote in this blog. Everybody claiming that they know everything about everything. But actually they know nothing… Hmm.. For example, BROADBAND. I notice that there’s alot of complaint about their broadband package.. complaining about their broadband this and that.. Come on guy’s!!… Dont be such a stupid ass! Open up your mind a bit.. Think!!.. If you are using WIRELESS broadband, of coz it’s difficult for you to get the speed that you want. As you know WIRELESS connection are not stable to compare with cable connection. There are lots of thing you need to consider if you want to get the speed that you desired. For example the devices that you use, the network coverage in your area, the location where you surfing, your FAIR USAGE POLICY allocate volume, the package that you subsribe and few other things. Please DO YOUR OWN research!!.. Anyway this is Malaysia, our technology is not that advance to compare with other country, example like Japan & USA… REMEMBER TO USE YOU BRAIN!!!…

  20. Strang3r on April 23rd, 2009 2:25 pm

Tiffy, yes I have checked my connection from every perspective. There was absolutely nothing wrong with my wireless connection, ma’am. I have even made a direct link to my modem. Furthermore, the technicians had to constantly call me up to see how my connection was, and we concluded that there was a cable problem from their service center. Good day.

  21. Calvin on April 23rd, 2009 6:51 pm

My contract with Streamyx has just about ended, I am thinking about migrating to P1-Wimax. I do a lot of downloading every month, always exceeding 40gb, with streamyx I have no problems with the trashold limitations.
P1-Wimax RM99/mth package has got a 20GB Monthly trashold, after which, one of their sales guy told me download speeds will be reduced by 30% to 50%. Sales guy number 2 at location 2 at Low Yat Plaza, told me that by poking the reset button on the back of modem will automatically reset the treshold to 0 GB, thus enabling high speed downloads again.
Frankly I have a very strong gut feeling that tells me both the P1-Wimax sales representative are giving me a whole load of bullshit and are both trying to pull off a fast one.
Can anyone out there who has encountered any problems and/or hiccups, when using the P1-Wimax services help me out here.

    Cheers & Thanks

CELCOM broadband can go die horrible… want to activate oso take 3 days…i sign maxis broadband… much better la… speed definately better then celcom…u guys sure or not?

  25. terabait on July 23rd, 2009 8:20 am

im using celcom brdbnd advanced package..comparing 2 maxis much better in term of speed but still the worst.hw can it claims the no 1 still but the speed horrible.must wait 3-4 years celcom to achieve the speed its claimed.p1 w1max the best…the weaknesses=contracts, not coverage areas, big bulk router/modem.
    best=speed ,loading time,latest tech wimax(faster) not 3g /hsdpa considering the speed.(poor)
if u r wanna to brdbnd in msia..pls accepted tht we still 3rd world country compared to s korea,u.sa,japan..

    P1 suck…. steamyx better

  29. Internet Geek on November 4th, 2009 12:49 am

lol.. you get what you paid for. I subscribe Maxis Broadband and now staying at 15th floor with 7.1MBps. so far no problem. previously i was annoyed by streamyx due to stupid fixed-line problem. always got anonymous ring on the telephone in the morning and i called the staff from steamyx and was told it was a technical problem with the lines. so many times the telephone wakes me up in the morning!!thats why i changed to maxis broadband. glad that my area is high speed coverage. ^_^

  30. Soo TC on November 20th, 2009 6:56 pm

I’m thinking of getting a broadband very soon. I heard Maxis and Izzi is both terrible, Streamyx is good only if connected to the phone but I heard they give free wireless broadband but should be in the house, not outside. Celcom some people complain, could it be just that they are out of coverage area? Celcom agents tell me it’s really good, how real? Seems P1 is my only choice. Is this a good choice?

  31. chamar on December 5th, 2009 5:28 pm

I didnt see anyone wrote about digi here..
I ahve been using digi EDGE for the past 1 year and just upgraded to 3G. Much better than Maxis and Celcom 3G anytime..

Digi EDGE easily beat that snail Celcom 3G here in Labuan..

  32. jim on December 6th, 2009 7:33 pm

honestly..i am using p1 home plus..actually the speed is ok..just just the limit of download is limit with different package..tell you all what..form the 1st of dec until today 6th of dec i already finish 20GB i really don understand how can it be.i didn’t online 24 hour i am not viewing youtube much..even last month i use you tube often still can sustain middle of month..how the hell p1 counting 20GB..unbeliveable

  33. chika on December 9th, 2009 2:56 pm

hi, there..i’m a celcom bb user..i started using broadband ever since i enter my uni in pahang..i use the advance one..when i use the bb there, the conection sometimes get disconnected several times esp starting from 12pm til 6pm..but it gets better after that til the next morning..to compare the connection there with my hometown in johor bahru, in johor bahru it is much better..
in my point of view, celcom bb is better than maxis bb or p1wimax..a lot of my friends are using celcom bb and claimed that they have no problem with it..as for digi bb i don’t know..streamyx is the best..but not portable..
for those who want to start using a broadband, i suggest you visit the celcom/maxis/digi bb website first before subscribing to see whether your area is within the coverage or not..

    wei2..
aku pakai P1 wimax kat area seksyen 7 shah alam.pada pendapat aku,tak payah la korang pakai p1…mengarut je.line asyik lampu merah je.hampeh…bayar sampai rm90 tapi line putus2.bile tepon customer services, cakap tengah upgrade.tipu cam cibai je…dlm sebulan, cume 2 minggu je leh guna.2 minggu lagi tak boleh sebab upgrade.klu camtu, tak boleh la charge rm90 sebulan kat kiteorg.patut charge rm45 sebab kiteorg dapat gune 2 minggu je.nak tukar broadband lain tak boleh pulak sebab dah sign contract…cilake tul…

area lain mungkin p1 bagus.tapi wat sementara ni kat sek 7,mmg x boleh…tapi untuk tahun depan, tak tau la.mungkin dah makin bagus…mungkin jugak syial tak berubah.

if they cant even give us a good connection speed dont provide internet services lah,so easy. we’re “pengguna”,kebebasan untuk bersuara. We dont have to consider what BROADBAND of course the speed is not stable lah or ETC ETC excuses. So simple.

  38. AIZ on December 26th, 2009 3:49 pm

U also can use your 3G hp as a modem and with celcom prepaid. Can use daily broadband only RM6 per day or weekly broadband only RM20 per weekly.

  39. Matrip on December 31st, 2009 1:29 pm

I just terminated Celcom BB. I lived in Sri Damansara.
I used it just for 2 months. It was lousy and worst than Maxis 384.

My advice for the time being do not expect much from wireless broadband. Stay with fixed line. Streamyx is offering 2 and 4 Mbps at an affordable price now or wait until March 2010 as they are going to offer 10 Mbps to those area with fibre optic.

Should you need the wireless badly, go for the cheapest. At least you would not be soooo frustrated.

  40. Charles F. Moreira on January 4th, 2010 6:24 am

I have Maxis HSDPA 3.6 Mb/s, Celcom 384 Kb/s, DiGi HSPA 384 Kb/s (recently automatically upgraded from DiGi EDGE with trully unlimitted access as before) and Jaring Flite 384 Kb/s.

I use these in Section 14, PJ except for Jaring which is in Section 17, PJ.

DiGi and Jaring are good and have continuous and steady data flow despite only 384 Kb/s and no fair-use limit. I just did a test of DiGi and it lives up to its 384 Kb/s claim.

Maxis is my main connection using a desktop modem and a WiFi access point/router and it achieves about 1.5 Mb/s early in the month but is throttled down to 64 Kb/s towards the end of the month if I exceed the 3GB limit. Data flow isn’t all that consistent but is OK.

There have been times when I have had to restart the modem to regain fast connection.

Hard to say about Celcom. I’m using it now and it’s OK but data flow isn’t all that consistent.

I’m outside P1 coverage in my “slice” of Section 14 near to Millennium Square, so cannot comment.

  41. Alvin on January 5th, 2010 11:55 pm

Don’t ever sign up for Maxis Broadband. All the road shows you see in the shopping complexes or promotions direct from Maxis are all scams. They con you into signing up with their package and later add additional charges to the package you have signed up with them earlier. I have the unfortunate experience when I signed up with them last year. I was told even after I have exceeded my download and upload quota I still can browse the net but at slow speed and no charges will be levied on any user who have exceed the quota. But since January this year they just simply block users whose usage have exceeded our download and upload quota and make additional payment if we want to continue to browse the net.

  42. photosynthesis on January 8th, 2010 1:41 pm

I’m in Sri Damansara area and have been using RM99 P1 package for about 5 months now. There have been 3 or 4 instances of the line being down, worst of which was about 8 weeks ago where it went red for 5 days.

I called the P1 helpline, and they told me that the line would be down indefinitely because of technical problems and could persist for a whole month. They also said they’d waiver my monthly fee of RM99.

But I’m guessing that was just a standard response line as a measure of calming callers down - the very next day the line was up and running again!

The line’s been good since then (albeit slower during peak hours) and I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’ll remain that way.

As for the fee waiver - nope, I never got any.

People in malaysia…. outside world internet speed now day minimum speed almost run in 8mb

But malaysia, if u lucky get full speed in 1mb… u should thanks god…

if we compare internet speed, just try to check with thailand, people already start to use 8mb. but streamyx 4mb only available in certain area… also our internet fee not cheap in south east asia with slow speed connection

What a useless, hopeless malaysian ISP…

  47. John on July 13th, 2010 5:12 pm

That’s what people make the comments ..
in overseas, you pay for 8mb, you get 8mb, but in Malaysia, you pay for 8mb, you only get 4mb, sometime even less..
