I’m Going to Australia!!! Great Ocean Road Trip!

Australia is such an amazing city, no wonder they produce such fine actors and actresses in the form of Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Nicole Kidman (Tom Cruise’s ex). I had a chance to visit Australia a while back i.e. Adelaide and intend to re-visit this land of Kangaroo’s and Koala’s soon. My memory about Australia was a very pleasant one and when I was in the UK, the television channel over there keep on reminding me about how wonderful Australia is by keeping on playing the ever so lovely soap, Home and Away. After all, this is where I first got to know Isla Lang Fisher, well you know, the girl in Confessions of a Shopaholic.

My next destination in Australia has got to be the Great Ocean Road. I wish to drive around this pathway and soak in the scenary. From what I understand this the most scenic coastal route. The idea to take this route for my next holiday came about after talking to a couple of friends who suggested they had a wonderful time driving in Australia. The Great Ocean Road stretch is located within the state of Victoria. From what I hear, Mawi and Ekin also will be on this route on their second honeymoon. Who knows I might bump into them.. of course with Ekin in the driver’s seat. That guy, still doesn’t know how to drive, how shameful!! Grrr..

So what’s so great about this roadtrip in Australia. In finding out more info about this trip, I did whatever first timer does, by checking out the internet. One good website is www.australianroadtrips.com.

GREAT OCEAN DRIVE…

To make this trip memorable, first I have to persuade my old Irish friend, David Whelan and Rory O’Byrne as well as the fantastic Imelda and Penny who are still working in Australia to join me. It has been a long time since I met them. May be we do and experience all the fun stuff that could happen on a trip together. Second, I have never been on a road trip before.. Hey this is nothing like a roadtrip on the PLUS highway ok! J Dave, Rory, Imelda and Penny..Speedo’s and Panties only please! For those who are not in the know, The Great Ocean Road is a 243 km stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool. You know why I like Torquay? It’s the place of origin for Rip Curl Surfing brand, people! Just down the road, you will also find, Bells Beach, which is world-famous for its spectacular wave. The final scene of the film Point Break was set and supposedly filmed at Bells Beach. Since I don’t know how to surf, I guess I will just take pictures and act unconscious to be saved by the beach coastguard babes.

Along the road you will also see great natural structures made up of limestone shaped by water erosion. Two of them are the TWELVE APOSTLES and LONDON ARCH. The Twelve Apostles are giant rock stacks that rise majestically from the Southern Ocean and are the central feature of the rugged Port Campbell National Park. The stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 metres high were left isolated from the shore. However constant erosion had caused some of the rocks to have collapsed big time in 2005. Now only 8 rocks left standing. I really should go and visit this site before no rocks left to be seen.

London Arch was previously called London Bridge, due to the close resemblance of its double arches to the actual bridge. Helicopter rides are a wonderful way of seeing this area in its glory. Here you can also see the koalas in the wild. This area is also a great place to see the penguins that reside along the coastline.

Next stop has to be Lorne and Apollo Bay. In Lorne you will find many Yellow Headed Cockatoo which can be fed by hand. Located at the foothills of the Otways and in the heart of the Great Ocean Road region, Apollo Bay has been called “Paradise by the Sea” due to its amazing beaches. Apollo Bay is a fishing town and a host to the annual Apollo Bay Music Festival and the Great Ocean Sports Festival.

For an even more interesting of the ocean view, I think I want to go to the Otway Fly Tree Top walk and visit the Cape Otway Lightstation. The Otway Fly is a 600 metre long 25 metre high elevated tree top walk. I don’t think you can get this from your PLKN’s training, so the chance of getting the best adventurous walk through the rainforest jungle of Australia, is something I’ve always dreamed of. Being here will you feel like one of those guys in Lord of The Rings or Ewoks in Star Wars. Otway Fly Tree Top Walk is the world’s highest and tallest. This is also where you can find the magnificent Erskine Falls.

The drive will then continue to Warnambool. In Warnambool I like to see whales off Logan’s Beach Whale Watching Platform. From what I hear this is only available from May to September. Warnambool is the largest city on the Great Ocean Road. Warnambool is also steep in history, that’s why you will find a maritime museum in this city.

WARNAMBOOL

The Mahogany Trail, which covers 23km of the coast between Port Fairy and Warrnambool where a mysterious ship is thought to be buried. The famous Australia’s mini Niagara i.e. Hopkins Falls is also located here. Hopkins Falls are 13km north-east of the city.

Then the journey should continue all the way to Adelaide. This is where my elder brother used to study and my adopted pet koala lives :) . I wonder how he is now? Along the road to Adelaide from Warnambool, there are Port Fairy, Grampians National Park and Mount Gambier. Port Fairy is one of Victoria’s earliest whaling and fishing ports. It’s so historic like Melaka that there is a special History Centre for me to catch up with the past. Adjoined to the mainland at the south of Port Fairy is Griffiths Island, which homes a colony of Mutton birds. Mutton birds you may ask? Do they look like cows? Well I also don’t know, that’s why I go on this trip to find out.

Then you will pass Grampians National park. This park offers an amazing display of rugged mountain ranges, wildflower, a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, and a wealth of Aboriginal rock art sites. there are many aboriginal shelters in the park where you can see ancient art work including Billimina Shelter, Gulgurn Manja Shelter, Manja Shelter and Ngamadjidj Shelter. This is also the place where I will stop and do some rock-climbing. One Utama’s rock-climbing? Damn that’s only for kids, ya’ all!

Mount Gambier will be our next stop. If in Scotland they have Loch Ness, Australia has its own wonder lake called Blue Lake. The lake changes colour with the seasons. In winter, it is a steel grey and then changes to a spectacular cobalt blue in the summer, giving rise to its name, Blue Lake. Nice isn’t it?

Our main focus in Adelaide will be Glenelg which is also a beach town. I guess we just can’t get enough of Australia’s wonderful beaches.

So forget about Sydney Harbour or the Gold Coast, come and join me on my Great Ocean Road drive. Woohoo..
